Job Description

About the Role

The Family Support Specialist will work with families in partnership to empower and build their agency to make effective change and overcome their identified family challenges. The role is heavily outreach based, engaging families in their homes, and translating initial engagement into a strong ongoing partnership. Once engaged, the role will not identify the family issues in a practitioner-led assessment, rather deliver interventions that build family awareness and insight into their history and current family challenges in order for families to self-identify their key challenges and lead their own change. 

Duties

  • Build the parenting capability, skills and knowledge that promote flourishing child rearing.
  • Facilitate imbedding structured family routines that improve household management, healthy eating and quality family time.
  • Improving parental management of stress and personal wellbeing, including coordinating access to ATSICHS Mental Health Service (Social Health Team).
  • Ensuring all children meet developmental milestones by facilitating family access to ATSICHS paediatric/Mums and Bubs medical services, including access to specialist allied health supports.
  • Improving financial health of families by achieving meaningful employment and/or training.
  • Improving school attendance and educational engagement of parents.
  • Enrolment in Kindergarten and family participation in early years playgroups.
  • Securing family safety.
  • Improving stable housing and family ability to maintain a tenancy.
  • Reducing AOD substance misuse.
  • Improving family health by coordinating to ATSICHS medical clinics for annual preventative health assessment.
  • Improving family dental care by coordinating to ATSICHS dental clinics for annual preventative dental check-up.

  • Permanent full time position with starting annual salary of $90,500 (depending on qualifications and experience).

Desired Skills and Experience

COVID-19 Requirement

  • Immunisation history showing  you have received two doses of a Covid -19 vaccine is encouraged.

Required

  • Current Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Human Services, Social Science, Health, Allied Health, Youth Work, Community Services, Family Intervention or Criminology with 4 years’ relevant experience in family support, child protection, youth support or related field.

OR

  • Current Diploma in Community Services, Social Work, Human Services, Child and Family, Allied Health, Youth Work, Child and Family Intervention with 5 years’ relevant experience in family support, child protection, youth support or related field.

AND

With at least 3 years of abovementioned experience in a case management role.

  • Demonstrated ability and comfortableness working in a performance driven environment to meet individual weekly, monthly and quarterly performance targets.
  • Demonstrated ability to build client agency, self-efficacy and facilitate change through client empowerment, while actively discouraging client dependence on supports.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide behaviour change interventions that build client self-awareness and active change in achieving their identified goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the whole-of-family, irrespective of primary client, in meeting the totality of family needs.
  • Demonstrated ability in coordinating multiple services in providing access to holistic care for clients, particularly integrating internal agency supports across multiple teams.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the factors contributing to vulnerability, disengagement, and intergenerational trauma of client group.
  •  Experience with case management for high risk and/or crisis clients, with high-level planning and organisational skills.  
  •  Knowledge of the supports available to target clients in the areas of mental health, substance misuse, education, employment and housing.

Additional Requirement

  • Requirement to travel across the Logan and/or Brisbane region, as per program location.
  • Current drivers’ licence.
  • Flexibility to work outside 8:30am-5:00pm business hours in meeting individual client needs and provide responsive care.
  • Working with Children’s Card (Blue Card) or be eligible to apply.
  • Valid police check.
